The Special Air Service has a unique relationship with St Martin’s church in Hereford, synonymous as the last resting place for members of the Special Air Service, or SAS, and are the best-known elite fighting force in the world. The SAS graves are situated next to the wall at the back of the church, and are easily identifiable due to their distinct white stones and grey wall tablets. The graves date from 1974 through to 2004.
St Martin’s Church dates back to 1645, it was badly damaged by cannon balls during the siege of Hereford, but a new building was completed in 1845 which is now the current church offering seating for 636.
We, Blue Olive Studio are honoured to be chosen to design a lasting memorial as proposed changes to the North transept. Sitting under the stained glassed windows dedicated to the SAS displaying some of their covert operations behind enemy lines.
The design features a walnut roll of honour panelled wall with a bronze poppy as a centre piece. The repositioning of the existing font to provide accessibility to its congregation. A stone floor of white and Oxford blue tiles lift the atmosphere allowing the colours of the stained glass windows to reflect the light around the church.
